Turmeric - The Defence Shield For Your Brain

Turmeric - The Defence Shield For Your Brain

Alzheimer's disease is the cause of nearly 70% of cases of dementia.  It is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized by the progressive cognitive deterioration. This leads to behaviour changes and compromises an individual's ability to perform daily activities.  Short-term memory loss is the most common early symptom, and as the disease progresses it can be debilitating to the overall condition of the individual.  Although the exact mechanism for what causes this disease is not known, scientists now have a pretty good idea.  One of the theories is that there is an excessive buildup of unwanted protein in the brain that compromises the brain's ability to function. Turmeric has been found to support the immune system to remove those proteins and therefore potentially delaying or even preventing disease progression.

Since turmeric is also a potent antioxidant, it has the ability to decrease the number of free radicals present in the body. Free radicals are atoms or molecules that have unpaired electrons in their valence shells. What does this mean exactly? It means that these free radicals are volatile substances that can react unnecessarily with important cell structures causing damage. These free radicals actually play a role in neuron degradation not only in Alzheimer's but other neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington's and Parkinson's disease. By incorporating turmeric into your diet, you are adding both a potent antioxidant to rid the body of free radicals, and also a defensive barrier for your brain.

Don't think twice about tuning into turmeric!
